SRI AMAN, Aug 16: The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) have fully extinguished a forest fire that affected an estimated 80 hectares along Jalan Kejatau-Lingga here, bringing a seven-day firefighting operation to an end today.
According to a report, the operation, known as Ops Kejatau II, concluded at 12.10pm after firefighters carried out final suppression efforts in Sectors 3 and 4.
The operation involved 18 firefighters, who were divided into two groups. Each group used a forest fire pump drawing water from an open source and deployed two 200-foot hose lines with two nozzles.
Firefighters used total flooding and direct attack methods to contain and extinguish the blaze.
Operations began at 7.30am today, with the team arriving at the site at 7.45am before conducting a briefing and assigning tasks.
Four personnel from the Department of Environment (DOE), equipped with a drone, also arrived at the site at 11am.
The department said all 80 hectares affected by the fire had been successfully extinguished, with no casualties reported.
However, firefighters faced several challenges during the operation, including limited open water sources, strong winds that caused the fire to spread rapidly and narrow road access.
Other agencies involved included the Civil Defence Force (APM), with five personnel; the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), with five personnel and four excavators; three plantation workers; and four DOE personnel.
The firefighting team departed the site at 12.45pm after the operation was declared fully completed. — DayakDaily
