80 Sarawak Metro staff and apprentices undertake 14-week Mandarin language programme

KUCHING, July 29: Eighty Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd (Sarawak Metro) staff and Young Talent Programme apprentices have taken a 14-week ‘Mandarin for Beginners’ language programme as part of the organisation’s Socio-Economic Enhancement Development (SEED) initiatives.

In a statement today, Sarawak Metro Director of Corporate Communication, SEED Programme and Bumiputera Relations, Alexius Barieng, explained the training programme aimed to address some of the challenges faced by its engineers and apprentices, especially those dealing with technology providers based in China.

“I hope ‘Mandarin for Beginners’ will provide them the opportunity to learn basic Mandarin towards enhancing better communication and collaboration,” said Barieng during the kick-off event at the Sarawak Metro corporate office.

Upon completing the programme, the staff and apprentices will be allowed to take an advanced Mandarin language programme, which includes technical engineering terminology.

The initiative is a collaboration between Sarawak Metro and its Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) Project Systems Package 1 Contractor, EMG JV Sdn Bhd.

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Professional Continuous Excellent Learning (ProCEL) Department provided all the training resources for the programme.

EMG JV Project Director Asmadi Manaf and Unimas Faculty of Education, Language and Communication Deputy Dean (Industry & Community Engagement) Dr Noratikah Mohamad Ashari were also present at the launch. — DayakDaily
