KUCHING, July 13: Despite the cancellation of the 722 gathering that was supposed to take place at Song Kheng Hai Square in Kuching, the “2025 Pan Sarawak Independence Day Convoy” will proceed as originally planned.
The event’s general convener Yeo Yaw Lee today assured that preparations for the motorcade are moving ahead and called on all registered participants to stay committed to the journey.
He stressed that the cancellation of the rally should not discourage those involved, as the essence of the convoy lies not in public gatherings but in its symbolic journey across Sarawak to awaken historical awareness and civic consciousness.
“The convoy, held in conjunction with the Sarawak Independence Day on July 22, seeks to commemorate the significance of the date as gazetted by the Sarawak government.
“It is also intended to educate the public on the State’s historical status, advocate for Sarawak’s rightful interests, and address policy imbalances that have long affected the region,” he said in a statement.
The journey will span four days from July 18 to 21, starting in Lawas and ending at Telok Melano Bay, the southernmost point of Sarawak also known as the “0KM zero starting point”.
Following the conclusion of the journey at Telok Melano, participants will return to Kuching for an overnight stay.
On the first day, the group will depart from Lawas at 7am, pass through the Labu checkpoint in Brunei, continue to Limbang, cross into Brunei again, and re-enter Sarawak at Sungai Tujuh before reaching Miri around noon.
After lunch, they will make a trip to Marudi and return to Miri’s beachfront recreational vehicle (RV) campsite for the night, where a bonfire and barbecue gathering will be held.
On the second day, the convoy will depart from Miri and travel through Bekenu, Niah, Batu Niah, Bintulu, Balingian and Mukah, before stopping in Sibu for the night.
The third day will take them from Sibu through Bintangor, Sarikei, Jakar, Saratok, Debak, Spaoh, Betong and Engkilili, before reaching Simanggang where they will rest for the night.
On the final day, the convoy will journey through Batu Kawa or Bau, Lundu and Sematan, before concluding the route at Telok Melano Bay.
Yeo, who also serves as treasurer of the Miri Recreational Vehicles Camper Association, noted that this convoy marks the first large-scale initiative by the newly formed association.
“The entire journey will be along the Pan Borneo Highway, showing the vast territory and road network of Sarawak,” he added. – DayakDaily
