BATU NIAH, June 6: An elderly man was killed after the pickup truck he was driving skidded off the road and overturned into a drain in a self-accident along the Pan Borneo Highway near Rumah Panjang Michael, Suai, earlier today.
In a TVS news report, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Batu Niah, which responded to the emergency at 11.25am, stated that the 71-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene after being found trapped inside the overturned vehicle.
Preliminary information suggested the victim was travelling from Bintulu towards Batu Niah when he was believed to have lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road.
Rescue efforts were challenging, as both doors of the pickup were wedged against the drain walls, limiting access to the victim.
Firefighters used a tow truck to reposition the vehicle before cutting through the door with rescue tools.
He was successfully extricated and handed over to police for further action.
The operation concluded with cleanup works to ensure the road was safe for other users. — DayakDaily
