70yo man loses RM17k after being deceived by car sales ad on Facebook

SIBU, June 28: Believing that he could secure a luxury car at a lower than market value price, a mechanic ended up losing RM17,220.

Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkifli Suhaili said that the 70-year-old victim who worked in a shipbuilding company had on June 7 saw an advertisement on Facebook that offered a Toyota Alphard for sale at RM60,000.

After that he communicated with a suspect on his intention to buy the car.

“In order to secure the deal, the victim was told to make payments. Subsequently he made five bank transfers on June 8 totalling RM17,220 to two bank accounts provided by the suspect,” he said.

However, the suspect demanded him to make another payment of RM3,500.

“The man felt he had been deceived and came forward to lodge a police report,” said ACP Zulkifli.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — DayakDaily
