MIRI, Sept 8: A 68-year-old man died en route to hospital following a road accident along the Pan Borneo Highway near Niah yesterday (Sept 7).
Miri District police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed that the fatal collision, which occurred around 2.30pm, involved a Perodua Viva and a Toyota Hilux.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the Perodua Viva, driven by the elderly victim, was travelling from Bekenu when it suddenly veered right.
This unexpected lane change caused the Toyota Hilux, driven by a 43-year-old man, to crash into the rear of the car as it was unable to avoid the collision.
The Perodua Viva suffered severe rear-end damage, while the Toyota Hilux sustained front-end damage.
The driver of the Viva was pronounced dead while being transported to the hospital. The Hilux driver was unharmed.
Alexson stated that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
The investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing, with no further details released at this time. — DayakDaily
