KUCHING, Aug 8: A total of 623 participants will gather at the Sarawak Hockey Stadium this Sunday (Aug 10) at 7pm for the Kuching Festival Folk Dance Display 2025, marking a vibrant celebration of movement, culture, and connection.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili said the dancers represent 27 groups from Kuching and eight from outside the city.
“Their participation reflects the growing reputation of this event as a cultural gathering that transcends borders and brings people together,” he said during a press conference held at the MBKS Headquarters today.
He added that the folk dance display is also part of MBKS’s Ageing Programme, a key initiative aimed at promoting active, healthy, and connected lifestyles among senior citizens.
“Through dance, we offer not only physical activity, but also opportunities for mental wellness, friendship, and joyful participation. I truly believe it is one of the most beautiful ways to stay active and involved, especially for our seniors, homemakers, and those seeking meaningful engagement,” he said.
The event is aligned with MBKS’s broader vision for the Kuching Festival, which is designed to be inclusive and accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
“Whether it’s a child attending a concert, a family enjoying the food fair, or seniors performing in a dance display, we ensure that no one is left behind. This is the MBKS way: inclusive, thoughtful, and community-driven,” he said.
Now a tradition for over 30 years, the Folk Dance Display has evolved into a signature highlight of the festival.
It not only preserves cherished cultural traditions but also strengthens the social fabric of Kuching by bringing communities together, celebrating diversity, and promoting harmony and values that Sarawakians continue to uphold and cherish.
