KUCHING, Aug 13: Two former national football players, Baddrol Bakhtiar and Muhamad Radhi Mat Din, who contested under Perikatan Nasional (PN) ‘scored’ big in the Kedah state election yesterday (Aug 12).
Baddrol, who played for Kedah Darul Aman FC and Sabah FC, won the Gurun state seat in a straight fight against Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Mohammed Firdaus Johari with a majority of 11,187 votes.
Firdaus is the son of the current Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul. They are both from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).
Previously, the Gurun seat was won by Johari in the 2018 Kedah state election before he resigned in December 2022, only to be elected as the 11th Speaker of Dewan Rakyat the following week.
Meanwhile, Radhi, who had previously served as Kedah team captain, defeated PH Kedah chairman Datuk Mahfuz Omar in the Alor Mengkudu seat with a 10,104-vote majority.
Both sportsmen are members of Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS).
At the same time, it is worth noting that Kedah Menteri Besar Dato Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, who also contested under the PN-PAS ticket, defended his Jeneri seat against Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dato Muhamad Khizri Abu Kassim with a handsome majority of 16,050 votes.
For the record, PN had conquered 33 out of 36 seats in the Kedah polls, with the remaining three secured by PH. — DayakDaily
