55,650 kg of smuggled rice seized

The bags of smuggled rice stored in a warehouse which have been seized by Customs Department.

MIRI, Nov 8: A total of 1,113 gunny sacks of smuggled rice, weighing around 55,650 kg and valued at RM116,865 inclusive of unpaid tax, have been seized by the district Customs Department on Thursday (Nov 7) morning.

Sarawak Customs director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha said that the smuggled rice were recovered during a raid on a warehouse at Jalan Sibu, Taman Tunku here.


“The operation was conducted around 10.45am and the team have detained a man believed to be the warehouse caretaker to assist in investigation into the case,” she added.

The case is being investigated under Section 135 of the Custom Act 1967 for possession of goods not approved by Customs.— DayakDaily
