KUCHING, April 25: A 50-year-old teacher at the Serian Education Office has tested positive for Covid-19 and was the source of infection for 49 other people, leading to the formation of a new Covid-19 cluster named as the Rayang Cluster in Serian.

According to reports from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) today, the Rayang Cluster is a community cluster occurring at Kampung Rayang, Serian.

“The index case identified in this village on April 6, 2021 is case 18,377, a 50-year-old woman identified through screening of close contacts to Covid-19 positive cases.

“The case works as a teacher at the Serian Education Office and was confirmed positive for Covid-19 on April 5.

“As a result of a few sporadic cases in Kampung Rayang suspected to occur due to community transmission, targeted active case detection was implemented at Kampung Rayang from April 20 to 23,” SDMC said in a statement.

Following screenings, 49 more cases linked to the Rayang Cluster were identified.

At present, a total of 1,305 individuals related to the cluster have been screened for Covid-19.

There were 50 individuals including the index case which tested positive, 982 individuals who tested negative and 273 individuals awaiting the results of their Covid-19 swab tests.

In the meantime, all the positive cases have been admitted to the Serian low risk quarantine centre for isolation and treatment.

SDMC also said there were two new Covid-19 clusters identified by the State Health Department today, comprising the Rayang Cluster in Serian and the Putai Cluster in Bukit Mabong.

There are presently 58 active clusters in Sarawak, from which, 18 clusters reported a total of 270 new cases today. — DayakDaily
