KUCHING, Aug 8: Members of the public with outstanding traffic summonses issued by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) can take advantage of a 50 per cent discount offer during a three-day special counter initiative across Sarawak from Aug 26 to 28, in conjunction with the 68th National Day celebrations.

Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Saifullizan Ishak said the initiative, carried out by the Sarawak Contingent Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, aims to ease the financial burden on the public while encouraging prompt settlement of outstanding traffic summonses.

“This initiative is part of our commitment to supporting the theme of this year’s National Day, ‘Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni’, by ensuring the people’s welfare is taken care of, in line with our aspirations for unity and well-being,” he said in a media statement today.

The discounted summons counters will be open at all district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPTD) offices throughout Sarawak. Counters will operate under the COPS (Centralised Online Payment System) platform during the campaign period.

Saifullizan explained that the 50 per cent discount is only applicable to traffic offences that fall under the Road Transport (Compoundable Offences) Rules 2003, which are eligible for compound settlement.

However, 10 serious offences are not eligible for any discount, including:

  • Road accidents
  • Offences involving court proceedings
  • Offences related to heavy vehicles
  • Dangerous overtaking
  • Driving on emergency lanes
  • Non-compoundable offences
  • Disobeying traffic lights
  • Overtaking on double lines
  • Modified exhaust systems
  • Summonses under ‘Ops Selamat’ operations

He also reminded the public that payment methods may vary by district. Most BSPTD counters accept cash, but only a few, including those in Kuching and Sibu, also accept credit and debit card payments.

Saifullizan advised vehicle owners to check and settle their summonses early to avoid complications such as being blacklisted during the renewal of road tax or driver’s license.

“We hope this initiative not only facilitates payment for traffic summonses but also strengthens cooperation between the authorities and the community while fostering patriotism during this month of independence,” he added.

Police have also advised road users to always adhere to traffic laws and regulations.

“Sarawak police will not compromise with any disregard for the law, especially by motorists, as we are committed to ensuring public safety,” he added. — DayakDaily
