SERIAN, Aug 31: Puncak Borneo constituency will be provided with at least 49 telecommunication towers to enhance Internet coverage in the area.

Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin said of the total, eight have been erected and are operational.

“Since becoming the MP in the area (Puncak Borneo), I have applied for 20 telecommunication towers from Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), of which eight have beem completed and are operational, while the remaining 12 are still in the process of being implemented.

“And just two months ago, I met with MCMC Sarawak for an additional 10 towers, and the Federal MCMC is also working with Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) to identify 19 areas to erect telecommunication towers,” Willie told reporters today.

He has earlier officiated at the Kuching district ‘Program Mereka@Komuniti Tahun 2020’ function at Kg Peraya in Padawan, near here.

Apart from that, Willie also pointed out that satellite Internet facilities have been built together with ConnectMe via Measat at Kg Karu, Kg Bratan, Borneo Highland Resorts and Kg Timuti to complement the telecommunication towers.

Willie also expressed disappointment that the telecommunication towers in Bengoh Resettlement Scheme (BRS) have been frequently vandalised.

“We have repaired the telecommunication towers nine times and just three weeks after that, they have been vandalised.

“We view this (vandalism) seriously, and we have informed the police to carry out frequent patrols and we are also working with the local community because we want to put a stop to this.”

Also present at the event was Sarawak Administrative Officer (SAO) from Siburan sub-district office Ranum Bari. — DayakDaily
