KUCHING, July 5: The Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) and Sejingkat Power Corporation (SPC) of Sarawak Energy Berhad planted 450 bakau kurap, a species of mangrove known scientifically as Rhizophora mucronata, at the Sejingkat coastline yesterday (July 4).

According to a media release, the initiative commemorated the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.

Addressing the event, FDS senior researcher Biha Razali emphasised the importance of the mangrove ecosystem, stating that this planting effort not only aids in mangrove conservation but also educates younger generations about the significance of preserving ecosystems.

Highlighting the crucial function of mangrove ecosystems, he said their degradation and loss can have significant and long-lasting impacts on environmental sustainability and human well-being.

Adopted by the General Conference of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) in 2015, the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is celebrated every year on July 26.

The day aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem” and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation, and use.

The planting programme was also part of Sarawak Energy’s Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign 2021-2030, supporting the Greening Sarawak Campaign led by FDS.
