KUCHING, July 10: The Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run 2026 is set to take place on July 26 with 4,200 confirmed runners from 20 countries.
Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the event, now in its third edition, will start from the MBKS Building boulevard in the heart of Kuching city.
Organised annually by the City Jogger’s Club (CJC), the run carries the theme “Embrace the Legacy, Run the Journey”, which Abdul Karim said reflects the connection between running and Kuching’s heritage, culture, and community spirit.
“There is an element of promoting heritage, especially the buildings in and around Kuching which people may sometimes pass by while driving or cycling without realising their significance. But when they are highlighted in this way, these buildings stand out.
“Runners can look forward to experiencing heritage landmarks, scenic riverside views and cultural murals around Kuching, including those promoted by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU),” he said during a press conference held at Baitul Makmur 2 today.
He also said the event is scheduled to coincide with the annual Kuching Food Festival, allowing local and international visitors to experience two of Kuching’s signature attractions in a single visit.
Abdul Karim, who is the Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, further said the confirmed participants comprise 2,940 runners from Sarawak (70 per cent), 672 from Peninsular Malaysia (16 per cent), 420 international runners (10 per cent), and 168 from Sabah (4 per cent).
The event features three categories: the 21KM Half Marathon, 10KM Run, and 5KM Fun Run. Both the 21KM and 10KM routes are certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), ensuring compliance with international standards.
A key highlight of this year’s edition is the “Postage Stamp Legacy” medal design, inspired by Kuching’s heritage and biodiversity. The design incorporates elements such as the Irrawaddy dolphin, heritage buildings, the rare Kapok tree, orchids, and inspiration from the stained glass of St. Peter’s Cathedral.
“These elements transform the event tee and finisher medal into meaningful keepsakes that celebrate Kuching’s heritage and every runner’s achievement,” Abdul Karim said.
A total of RM61,000 in cash prizes will be awarded across the competitive categories, including national categories aimed at encouraging greater Malaysian participation while continuing to attract elite international athletes.
Race pack collection will be held on July 24 and 25 at Pullman Hotel Kuching from 11am to 6pm.
On race day, the 21KM category will flag off at 4am, followed by the 10KM run at 6am and the 5KM fun run at 6.30am. — DayakDaily
