KUCHING, May 22: The Kuching Immigration Enforcement Division has detained 39 undocumented immigrants in an operation conducted from May 20 to 21 involving several construction sites and workers’ quarters in the area.
In a statement, the 39 undocumented immigrants are from Indonesia and between the ages of 18 and 56, and the locations targeted in the operation include an apartment construction site in Pending, a housing development project in Bintawa, and workers’ quarters in the Demak Laut industrial area.
“Investigations found that some of the detained foreign nationals were suspected of committing various offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63, including overstaying, working without valid passes or work permits, and misusing social visit passes for employment purposes.
“All detainees were taken to the Kuching Immigration Enforcement Division office for further action and detailed investigations,” said the department.
The department also added that in the same operation, two employers were also summoned to assist with investigations and provide statements regarding the employment of foreign workers at the premises involved. — DayakDaily
