KUCHING, June 4: A 38-year-old Kuching man who went missing during a business trip to China in December last year has safely returned to Malaysia and reunited with his family, according to Sarawak United Peoples’ Party Public Complaints Bureau (SUPP PCB) chief Milton Foo.
Foo confirmed that the man returned home last month following months of efforts by Malaysian and Chinese authorities after he was reported missing earlier this year.
The case first came to public attention on Jan 5, 2026, when the man’s family sought assistance from SUPP PCB and relevant authorities after losing contact with him during his trip to China.
According to Foo, the family lodged reports with the police and the Sarawak office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in December last year, prompting follow-up action through official channels by the Malaysian Embassy in China and relevant Consulates-General.
He said the efforts were carried out in close coordination with Chinese Public Security authorities.
“Through the concerted efforts of all parties, the individual was eventually able to contact his family and has safely returned home,” he said in a statement today.
The man had travelled to China on Dec 22, 2025, and was last known to be in Chaoyang City, Liaoning Province. He was scheduled to return to Kuching on Jan 1, 2026, but became unreachable, triggering concerns among family members.
Foo expressed appreciation to the various agencies and individuals involved in resolving the case.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Sarawak Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Malaysian Embassy in China, Consul-General of China in Kuching Xing Weiping, the police, as well as the Chinese authorities for their swift assistance and cooperation.
“My thanks also go to the media for helping to raise awareness on the importance of consular protection,” he said.
Meanwhile, Foo reminded Malaysians travelling overseas for business or leisure purposes to maintain regular communication with their families and to comply with local laws and regulations.
He also advised Malaysians facing emergencies abroad to seek assistance from the nearest Malaysian Embassy or Consulate-General or contact him directly at +6012-8868682. — DayakDaily
