38 new Covid-19 infections detected at govt-owned company and bank, triggers two workplace clusters in Kuching

KUCHING, March 24: Two workplace clusters have emerged in Kuching today involving a subsidiary company owned by the State government at Jalan Bukit Mata and a bank in Jalan Padungan with a total of 38 Covid-19 cases reported.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in its update on the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak today, reported that the Jalan Bukit Mata Cluster has 21 infections involving the staff of a State-owned subsidiary company.

The index case (Case 263,281) is a local male staff who tested positive from symptomatic screening at a private hospital on March 3.


The infection is believed to have originated from the community and has spread in the workplace through close contact among employees and staff with the second generation of infection detected among family members.

A total of 30 people linked to this cluster have been screened, of which nine tested negative.

Meanwhile, the Jalan Padungan Cluster has racked up 17 infections so far, involving officers and staff of a private financial institution.

SDMC said that the index case (Case 269,926) is a local man who tested positive also through symptomatic screening at a private hospital on March 8.

The infection is suspected to have originated from the community and spread in the workplace through close contact among the officers and staff of the financial institution.

A total of 23 people linked to this cluster have been screened, of which six tested negative.

All the cases have been referred to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and Covid-19 Assessment Centre (CAC) Kuching District.

With these two new clusters reported today, the number of active clusters in Sarawak has increased to eight with no new cases added to the remaining six clusters. — DayakDaily
