KUCHING, April 16: A total of 32 councillors for the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) were sworn in today, marking the start of the 2025–2028 term with a renewed line-up comprising both returning members and new faces.
According to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, the swearing-in ceremony, held at the SRDC meeting room on the 18th floor of Wisma Sanyan in Sibu, saw nine new appointments and 23 reappointments officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
SRDC chairman Councillor Sempurai Petrus Ngelai was also reappointed for another term, serving from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2026.
Sempurai described the current line-up as a balanced mix of experience and fresh perspectives, which he believes will strengthen local governance through progressive and inclusive strategies.
“I am confident that this dynamic blend of views will inject innovative ideas into the council while preserving the wisdom and experience needed to guide policy-making,” he said in his address.
Sempurai also expressed his commitment to enhancing community engagement through ground-level outreach, and improving service delivery in areas such as infrastructure, environmental health, and waste management.
He reaffirmed that the council’s mission aligns with Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), aimed at fostering inclusive and sustainable growth.
“We strive to uphold dignity, integrity, and commitment in public service because we are here to serve the people with humility and responsibility,” he added.
Meanwhile, Wong Ching Yong was reappointed as SRDC deputy chairman.
The councillors for this term comprise representatives from the four component parties of the State government.
Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) has seven councillors: Michael Dee, Mohamad Arhman Ahmad Mahdi, Johny Sain, Leo Albert Tony, Sofia Ujang, Minggu Angga, and Denis Atut.
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has 12: Collin Tinting @ Gindien, Tay Yeong Soon, Yong Ing Hock, Kevin Lau Kor Jie, Wong Sing Ing, Johnny Ganing, Jeksen Chuban, Loi Kwong Lee, Chieng Siew Yee, Baling Sumbang, and Jimmy Patrick Yiu Wan Wei.
Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) is represented by Wong Hua, Dr Ling Sien Ngan, Teo Ming Pau, Hii Bee Choon, and Stanley Ngelambai Majang.
Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) has eight councillors: David Entulu, Henry Kanyan Vincent Rawing, Lawrence Lun Lupang, Binit Madang, Dr Gavin Man Gima, Stanley Kuda Jabat, and Morris Johnny. — DayakDaily
