3 Covid-19 clusters emerge in Miri market, furniture shop, rice warehouse and fast food restaurant

KUCHING, June 2: Three workplace-related Covid-19 clusters have emerged in Miri today involving a market at Jalan Brooke, a furniture shop at Jalan Jee Foh 8, a rice warehouse at Jalan Cattleya 2B and a fast food restaurant at Jalan Miri-Bintulu.

The cases detected at the market now number at 15 cases, while the furniture shop and rice warehouse recorded 23 cases and the fast food restaurant recorded 15 cases.

Sarawak declared six new Covid-19 clusters today. The remaining three were the Bunut Cluster in Mukah which stemmed from Raya visitings and two longhouse clusters in Tatau (Sungai Penyarai Cluster) and Selangau (Nanga Meruan Cluster).


The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in its daily update report on Covid-19 situation in Sarawak, reported that the Jalan Brooke Cluster was detected among traders at the market located in Jalan Brooke with 15 cases reported so far.

The cluster stemmed from a 66-year-old man who tested positive following post-admission screening at Miri Hospital after being brought to the Emergency and Trauma Department on May 17 by members of public after suffering injuries from a fall.

As of today, a total 116 individuals have been screened whereby 48 tested negative while 53 are still awaiting lab test results.

The Jee Cattleya Cluster was detected among workers of a furniture shop at Jalan Jee Foh 8 and a rice warehouse at Jalan Cattleya 2B with 23 cases reported so far.

The cluster stemmed from a 35-year-old man who was tested positive following pre-travel screening to Bintulu District at a private hospital.

As of today, a total of 145 individuals have been screened whereby 86 tested negative while 36 are still awaiting lab test results.

The Jalan Pinang Riam Cluster was detected among workers of a fast food restaurant located in Jalan Miri-Bintulu with 15 positive cases reported so far.

As of today, a total of 129 individuals have been screened whereby 106 tested negative while eight still awaiting lab test results.

All positive cases from these three clusters have been referred to the Miri Hospital and admitted to the hospital as well as Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) Miri for treatment and isolation.

Meanwhile, SDMC also declared the end of five clusters namely Tarat Tani in Serian, Tabuan Jaya and Taman Pelita in Kuching, Sileng Dayak in Lundu and Sungai Mas in Sebauh after no new local cases were reported in the last 28 days.

As such, there are still 81 active clusters remaining in Sarawak, out of which 15 clusters recorded an increase in daily infections with 98 more cases added. — DayakDaily
