KUCHING, Feb 28: A total of 294 out of 1,754 citizenship applications in Sarawak from 2016 to 2022 have been approved under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution, according to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
According to a news report published by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), the Federal government has the highest honour and exclusive authority to grant Malaysian citizenship.
“In evaluating applications for Malaysian citizenship, the burden of proving eligibility to be granted Malaysian citizenship rests with each applicant,” he said in response to a question from Igan MP Ahmad Johnie Zawawi during Monday’s (Feb 27) Dewan Rakyat session.
Further, Saifuddin Nasution stated that the consideration process is subject to the conditions set out in Part III of the Federal Constitution, the Citizenship Rules 1964, and relevant legislation in the areas of marriage registration, adoption, child legitimacy, and immigration regulations. — DayakDaily
