SEBUYAU, June 10: The construction of a 28-kilometre road linking Batang Sadong to Sebuyau, targeted for completion by Aug 18, 2028, has achieved 3.85 per cent progress and is proceeding on schedule despite facing technical and logistical challenges.
The project, known as Package A-2 under the Sarawak Coastal Road Project, is part of the Sarawak government’s broader initiative to upgrade the state’s coastal road network and enhance regional connectivity.
In a TVS news report, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo said that despite supply constraints, particularly the need to transport sand from central Sarawak areas such as Sibu, the contractor has established a dedicated materials delivery hub in Kabong to expedite construction and minimise delays.
“The project also includes the construction of four bridges and traverses a high-risk area near Ulu Sebuyau National Park, which requires specialised engineering methods to ensure safety and environmental sustainability,” he said after receiving a project briefing during a site visit on Monday (June 9).
He emphasised that the new route will bring substantial benefits to local communities by reducing the travel distance from 43km to approximately 28km, cutting travel time by 30 to 40 minutes compared to the existing road.
“With this new road, the journey from Batang Sadong Bridge to Sebuyau will be reduced from over 90 minutes to just one hour,” he added.
Looking ahead, Aidel said the government is planning to upgrade the entire stretch from A1A and A1B to the Batang Samarahan Bridge into a four-lane dual carriageway as a long-term measure to accommodate future traffic growth.
“The government remains confident the project will be completed as planned,” he said. — DayakDaily
