28 more cases added to Jalan Merpati cluster in Miri as total swells to 79

KUCHING, March 18: A total of 28 more Covid-19 cases have been added to the Miri’s workplace Jalan Merpati Cluster overnight which has now grown to 79 in total.

State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas reported that Jalan Merpati Cluster was one of eight active clusters in Sarawak which recorded an increase in daily infections today.


“A total of 350 individuals linked to the cluster have been screened whereby 212 were negative while 59 are still awaiting for lab test results,” he told a press conference on Covid-19 situation update for Sarawak today.

Jalan Merpati Cluster was declared only yesterday after a Covid-19 positive worker of a shopping mall in Jalan Merpati spread the disease to 50 other people including family members and colleagues.

The other seven clusters that logged single-digit cases today were Kampung Hilir, Jalan Sanyan, Kiba and Jalan Awang in Sibu as well as Sena in Miri, Bukit Tunggal in Julau and Emperoh Jambu in Kuching.

Community cluster of Kampung Hilir picked up three more cases to increase the cluster’s total to 40. A total of 46 individuals have been screened whereby four were negative while two were still awaiting for lab results.

Workplace Sanyan Cluster, which was linked to a supermarket in Sibu, registered two more cases to push the cluster’s total to 21. A total of 21 individuals were screened and all were positive.

Longhouse Kiba Cluster recorded one case to bring the cluster’s total to 40. A total of 98 individuals have been screened and no results were pending.

Jalan Awang Cluster, which was linked to the inmates of Sibu Prison, logged two cases today to increase the cluster’s total to 54. A total of 55 individuals have been screened whereby one were negative and no results were pending.

Miri’s Sena Cluster picked up one case to bring the cluster’s total of 80. A total of 250 individuals have been screened whereby 135 were negative while 35 were still awaiting for lab results.

Longhouse cluster of Tunggal in Julau also added two more cases today to push the cluster’s total to 49. A total of 155 individuals have been screened whereby 106 were negative while no results were pending.

Funeral cluster of Emperoh Jambu in Kuching recorded one more case to increase the cluster’s total to 325. A total of 1,800 individuals have been screened whereby 1,380 were negative while 95 were still awaiting for lab results.

Sarawak also identified two new clusters today namely Semuja Immigration Depot Cluster in Serian with 99 cases all involving illegal immigrants detained at the Depot, and Sungai Atap Cluster in Meradong with 19 cases linked to a longhouse.

With that, the total number of active clusters in Sarawak has increased to 34.

The remaining 24 clusters did not record any cases today. — DayakDaily
