25 pct cut on household power bills from April to September

KUCHING, April 28: Domestic households in Sarawak can expect electricity bills to be reduced by 25 per cent over the next six months to ease their financial difficulties amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sarawak Energy has implemented the special discounts, ranging between five and 25 per cent, which falls under the federal government’s Prihatin Economic Stimulus Package with a further top up by the Sarawak governmentā€™s own Sarawakku Sayang Special Assistance Package.

In a media release today, Sarawak Energy disclosed that eligible customers from its 700,000 account holders in the domestic, commercial and industrial categories will have their electricity bills discounted accordingly.

“The highest 25 per cent discount rate will be for domestic housesholds and comes from a combination of two per cent borne by the federal government and an additional 23 per cent by the Sarawak government.”

Domestic households are private dwelling with no commercial or industrial activities in such premises.

“In the Commercial (C1, C2 and C3) category, premises with commercial or trading activities will receive a 15 per cent discount.

“As for industrial (I1, I2 and I3), these comprised of premises with industrial activities such as processing factories with at least 80 per cent motor load. A 10 per cent reduction will be applied to electricity bill for I1 and I2 while I3 will receive five per cent.”

Sarawak Energy also revealed that the discount package will be provided over a period of six months for electricity consumption from April 1, 2020 till Sept 30, 2020 and is expected to total over RM166 million.

“All eligible customers will have their bills automatically computed for their relevant discounts over the stipulated period, beginning with their April electricity consumption.”

Sarawak Energy pledged its full support for the state government and the federal government in their efforts to reduce the economic burden of the people at this time.
