KUCHING, June 26: Sarawakian golfer Ashley Lau Jen Wen has successfully qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, marking her first appearance at the prestigious event in August.
Lau who is from Bintulu, is the first Sarawakian golfer to qualify for the Olympic Games.
The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) announced on Facebook that the 24-year-old golfer secured her spot by ranking 50th in the Women’s Olympic Golf Rankings.
“Ashley Lau Jen Wen has secured her spot to compete in the XXXIII Olympic Games Paris 2024.
“The 24-year-old golfer will make her debut at the Olympic Games after being ranked 50th in the Olympic Golf Ranking for the Women’s category, which concluded on Monday, June 24, and was officially announced by the International Golf Federation on June 25.
“Ashley will join Gavin Kyle Green to represent Malaysia in the golf event at Paris 2024, which will start on Aug 1 for men and Aug 7 for women,” stated OCM.
Multiple news reports indicate that Lau is one of 60 women golfers who will be teeing off at Le Golf National in August.
Lau is the 22nd athlete from Malaysia to qualify for the esteemed games, joining the ranks of two-time Olympic medalist Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang (track cycling) and 2022 world champion in men’s doubles Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik (badminton).
For the record, the Paris Olympics will be held from July 26 to Aug 11.
In the meantime, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian took to Facebook to extend his congratulations to Lau, acknowledging her historic achievement as the first Sarawakian golfer to qualify for the Olympic Games. — DayakDaily
