KUCHING, March 2: New telecommunications network facilities, which are now being actively implemented under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), will benefit a total of 245 longhouses in Meluan state constituency, says Meluan assemblyman Rolland Juat.

According to a press release from the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Rolland hopes that the schoolchildren will not be left behind when it comes to searching for educational information once they have access to a network of telecommunications.

“Such fundamental facilities are crucial to our efforts to produce quality students,” he said after listening to a briefing on the network telecommunications for the Meluan state constituency presented by the MCMC director Adiman Ajem and SDEC stakeholder management officer Mohd Faiz Jafni at the Julau District office in Julau yesterday.

Furthermore, Rolland called on the Meluan state constituency Women’s Bureau to engage in handicrafts as a preparation for participating in e-commerce once the area is equipped with a telecommunications network.

He stated that his region has 116 Women’s Bureaus whose talents need to be honed and showcased to the outside world.

“I believe that the Meluan area is no longer left behind in Sarawak’s digital economy development agenda because of the existence of a comprehensive telecommunications network.

“In fact, villagers can market their agricultural products such as pepper, palm oil, terung asam, and cangkuk manis because the product is heavily cultivated in the Meluan area,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Adiman noted in the briefing that up to 17 new towers equipped with 4G networks will be constructed in the Meluan region.

Moreover, according to Faiz, 13 Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Telecommunication (SMART) towers for the second phase of SDEC are anticipated to be completed during the fourth quarter of this year.

Rolland seized the opportunity after the briefing to personally inspect the SMART tower construction site under SDEC in Julau.

Also present were Julau District officer Wee Teck Min, SMA central region engineer, Ts Helestine Lium, SMA technologist James Bungan, as well as community leaders and tribal leaders of the Meluan state constituency. — DayakDaily
