KUCHING, July 10: A 22-year-old student in Sibu lost RM328,454.42 after falling victim to an online part-time job scam.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the victim, who is a university student in Sibu, was introduced by her friend to an unknown individual through the TanTan application offering a part-time job online with a five per cent commission by ordering goods from an application.
According to him, the victim was later instructed to contact someone through WhatsApp to get the link for the goods from the application.
“She was also instructed to transfer money through a bank account number given within 20 minutes before the commission was credited into her account within 10 to 15 minutes.
“Following that, the victim has made 53 bank transactions amounting to RM328,454.42 to seven different bank accounts from May 18 until June 30 to complete the purchase to get the commission.
“The victim only realised she had been scammed after failing to get her money back, did not receive the promised commission, and was unable to contact the suspect,” he said in a statement today.
In a related case, Mohd Azman said a 62-year-old in Kuching lost RM212,100 to an online investment scam.
He also said the victim, a former company supervisor, was offered by a person known as ‘Miss Wong’ through a WeChat application in May this year to invest in ‘Bebula DY’, which promised a 20 per cent return within 240 seconds based on the money invested.
“Three days later, the victim also received a message through a WhatsApp application offering the same investment scheme, and she agreed to join it.
“She then made 11 transactions amounting to RM212,100 to seven different bank accounts from June 11 until July 4, as instructed by the suspect.
“The victim only realised that she was deceived after she failed to withdraw the investment money and profit through the ‘Bebula DY’ system after meeting the withdrawal requirements, and the suspect also requested the victim to make an additional payment of RM54,690 as fees,” he added. — DayakDaily
