KUCHING, Jan 5: A 20-year-old student was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today for assaulting his 18-year-old cousin.
The accused pleaded guilty to the charges under Section 323 of the Penal Code before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.
According to the allegation, the incident occurred at a 24-hour convenience store at Jalan Green Hill at approximately 1.06 am on Dec 31, 2023.
The accused intentionally caused injury by punching his cousin’s head, who, according to police reports, suffered head injuries, as confirmed by medical records.
If convicted, the accused may face imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
Magistrate Zubaidah allowed the young offender to be released on bail with a bond set at RM2,000, with his father as the surety. The release is pending a social report, scheduled for February 9.
The prosecution, led by Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin, presented the case, while the accused did not have legal representation.
The facts of the case revealed that the victim filed a police report alleging that the accused had assaulted him. Medical reports supported the claim of head injuries sustained during the incident.
According to sources, the root cause of the altercation was the accused’s dissatisfaction with the victim, who is also the complainant, for neglecting his chronically ill father.
The father had been abandoned in the hospital for a month, with only the accused and his brother taking care of him during that period. — DayakDaily
