2 men sentenced to one-year jail for stealing 3 units of solar street lamp in Sibu

SIBU, August 9: The Magistrate’s Court here yesterday fined two men RM10,000 in default one year’s jail each for stealing three units of solar street lamp.

Magistrate Flavian Edward Henry passed the sentence after the accused, Tan Jin Hua, 32, and Lau Sie Heng, 36, pleaded guilty for the offence.

They were charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code.


Both of them however opted for the default sentence as they could not pay for the fine.

According to the brief facts of the case, the duo had from 6pm on July 1 to 4.30pm on July 2, stole the items located in Sungai Pak, Jalan Stabau.

A community leader of the area had at 4.30pm on July 2 informed the street lamp installation contractor that three units of the lamp costing RM6,300 had gone missing from the pole.

Police investigation on the case led to the arrest of the accused on July 24 after they spotted a suspicious looking four-wheel drive at Jalan Ling Kai Cheng.

The police seized three iron poles with solar lights, two solar panel units and one solar panel unit with iron poles from a house in Jalan Lada.

At about 5.50pm on the same day, the police also confiscated a solar panel and an LED street lamp along with an iron pole from a house in Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah. — DayakDaily
