2 killed in separate crashes approximately 20 minutes apart in Miri

MIRI, April 11: Two people were killed in separate road accidents here on the night of April 8, according to Miri police.

Miri district police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu confirmed that two police reports were lodged regarding the fatal accidents, taking place approximately 20 minutes apart.

The first collision occurred at approximately 8.20pm near the flyover in central Miri. A Toyota Vios driven by a 40-year-old man struck a bicycle carrying two local individuals—a 43-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman.

Initial investigations revealed that the car collided with the bicycle upon arriving at the scene. The woman sustained serious head injuries and succumbed to her wounds at Miri Hospital at 12.35am the following day.

The second fatal crash took place around 8.47pm along KM883 of the Pan Borneo Highway between Bintulu and Miri. It involved a Honda City driven by a 34-year-old local man and a motorcycle carrying two foreign nationals.

The car struck the motorcycle, resulting in the death of a 63-year-old male passenger at the scene due to severe head injuries. The 34-year-old rider also sustained injuries, though the extent has not been disclosed. The driver of the car was unharmed.

Police have opened investigation papers for both cases under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. — DayakDaily
