KUCHING, May 10: Two workers were killed while two others were injured in a blast which triggered a fire in a chemical plant at Samalaju Industrial Park in Bintulu yesterday (May 9).

While the police and Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) have yet to confirm the explosion today, it was believed that the incident took place at around 3pm in a unit at the chemical plant.

According to Sin Chew Daily Sarawak, two Iban workers aged 34 and 35 were killed on the spot with another two employees aged 26 and 33 who sustained injuries were rushed to the Bintulu Hospital.

It was reported that the four victims were working in the plant when a machine was suspected to have suddenly exploded, leading to the death of two workers, wounding two others.

The bodies of the deceased were said to have been sent to the mortuary of Bintulu Hospital.

However, there was no official statement from the authorities at the time of writing and the actual cause of the incident has yet to be determined while an investigation is believed to be underway.

A video recording of the incident went viral on social media last night, with footage showing officers believed to be paramedics or police covering the body of one of the deceased with cloth.

A large crowd of people can be seen gathered on site as sorrowful wails and cries of grief can be heard in the background as the body was lifted onto a truck. — DayakDaily
