KOTA SAMARAHAN, July 3: The 19th Mini Film Festival x Mini Art Festival (MFFxMAF) is set to captivate Kuchingites at La Promenade Mall here from July 6 to 9.
The festival is organised by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) students and academics in collaboration with renowned cultural organisations including the Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur and the Goethe-Institut Malaysia.
According to a press release, this year’s festival will showcase over 60 thought-provoking short films and two compelling feature films from Southeast Asia, Japan and United States of America that highlights the rich cultural tapestry of Asia and beyond.
Among the films are “Kita”—a feature length documentary directed by Nova Goh, a talented filmmaker from Sarawak, and “OBAKE”—an outstanding film from Japan which has been selected from the esteemed PIA Film Festival Japan.
In addition to the film screenings, film enthusiasts and budding creatives can immerse themselves in film-related workshops and forums supported by the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS). These workshops provide an invaluable opportunity for aspiring filmmakers to hone their skills and gain insights from industry experts such as Rashid Salleh and Nandita Solomon.
One of the festival’s highlights is the forum on ‘Building A Healthy Art and Film Ecosystem in Sarawak and Malaysia’ where artists and filmmakers from Sarawak and other parts of Malaysia will come together to discuss and provide valuable insights into creating a robust and sustainable art and film ecosystem in the region.
To further celebrate the festival’s cultural exchange, a special origami workshop has been curated for attendees. Participants can explore the ancient art of origami, creating intricate paper designs that represent the beauty and diversity of the festival itself.
There is also a “Fun with Watercolor” workshop which will feature artist Sylvester Jussem, who will instruct participants on expanding their watercolouring skills. The activity will enhance the participants’ visual imagination, motor skills, and eye-hand coordination. Participants are to bring their own paper, paintbrushes and watercolour.
