KUCHING, Aug 6: A 19-day-old newborn allegedly sustained a fractured left arm while under the care of a confinement centre in Kuching, with the incident now being investigated by the authorities.
According to a post shared online after case went viral, the baby’s parents were informed at around 1am on Aug 4 that their baby’s left arm appeared swollen. The baby was subsequently taken to hospital, where an X-ray examination confirmed a fracture to the left arm.
Following the incident, the family lodged a police report and requested that the confinement centre review its closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to determine what may have caused the injury. The footage was later examined as part of the ongoing police investigation.
According to the parents, the CCTV recording appeared to show a staff member handling the newborn in a manner they described as rough and inappropriate. They alleged that the staff member pulled the baby’s left arm forcefully while changing clothes, struck the baby’s hand during feeding, and handled the baby with vigorous movements.
The parents said they shared the incident publicly to seek accountability, transparency and a thorough investigation, while hoping similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
In an official statement issued on Wednesday (Aug 5), the confinement centre said it was taking the matter seriously and is fully cooperating with the authorities by providing the necessary information and documents to assist the investigation.
It added that statements from relevant individuals have also been recorded.
The centre said the staff member linked to the incident is no longer working at the facility and is currently under investigation.
It also said it is reviewing its staff performance, training, supervision and care procedures, while strengthening internal protocols to improve safety, professionalism and accountability.
As investigations are ongoing, the centre said it would not comment further on the case and urged the public not to spread unverified information or defamatory claims. — DayakDaily
