KUCHING, Jan 14: A 16-year-old local boy has been identified as the driver of the car that caused the horrific accident at Jalan Teo Kui Seng in Stutong Baru today.
According to a media statement by Kuching district police chief Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, the accident was believed to have occurred at around 12.50pm today involving three cars and two motorcycles.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred when the driver of the car coming from Airport Road heading towards Jalan Setia Raja lost control of the vehicle and entered the adjacent road, crashing into two motorcycles and two cars coming from the opposite direction,” he said.
Because of the accident, four victims—three males and a female who were all locals between the ages of 16 and 45—died at the scene, whereas another victim, 16, was confirmed to have passed away while being treated at the Red Zone at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).
He said that the three victims who were injured are still receiving treatment at the emergency unit.
As for the 16-year-old driver, he sustained injuries to his neck and will be detained after receiving treatment at SGH.
“The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving which carries a jail sentence of five to ten years and a fine between RM20,000 and RM50,000 if convicted,” he said.
