KUCHING, Jan 16: Sixteen houses in Kampung Opar which were affected by a recent storm received monetary compensation and house repair assistance, and were listed as projects under ‘Program Penambahbaikan Rumah Miskin Sarawak’ (PPRMS).

According to a news report from Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) today, the assistance was handed over by Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang, during his visit to inspect the damaged houses in the village together with Bau District Disaster Management Committee (JBDB) yesterday.

Billy said the monetary assistance amounting to RM164,050 which is channeled through JBDB is allocated by the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), with each affected house receiving RM1,000.

“Meanwhile, a total of RM148,050 is for the house repair assistance, and it is funded by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC),” he said.

Apart from the assistance, Billy noted, his Opar constituency service centre also allocated a total of RM141,000 through PPRMS.

“I hope that repair work on the damaged houses is according to the Public Works Department (JKR)’s standard and will be completed soon,” he added.

On Jan 4, a typhoon hit Kampung Opar damaged 16 houses and affected almost 60 victims.

JBDB chairwoman Anielia Siam, who is also the Bau District Officer, said the monetary compensation and house repair assistance follows standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by Nadma and SDMC.

She also said the assistance must be channelled to the affected victims within 10 days after a disaster occurs. – DayakDaily
