KUCHING, Aug 25: Eleven countries will compete in the Sarawak International Open Tenpin Bowling Championship 2023 from September 4 until 9.
Representing Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, his deputy Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu said the participating countries are Poland, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Philippines, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, Brunei, Australia, and Malaysia.
“We have local teams from Malaysia participating in the event, such as from the Federal Territory, including the Sarawak Junior Team and the national and national youth teams.
“Professional bowler from the United States, Daria Pajak, will also conduct a coaching clinic during the event,” he told a press conference at Pandalela Rinong Aquatic Centre in Petra Jaya today.
Meanwhile, Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association of Sarawak (Abas) vice president Robert Lu Nam Min said the championship will be held at Megalanes Sarawak in Batu Kawa.
He also said they are targeting around 700 participants this year compared to 568 in last year’s event.
“About 300 bowlers will be competing for more than RM160,000 total prize money,” he added.
Among other events that will be held during the championship is the Sabati Cup on September 5 to commemorate the Association of Wives of Ministers and Assistant Ministers of Sarawak (Sabati).
The event is open to everyone but will be limited to 38 teams (teams of five) with a total of RM3,500 prize money.
Apart from that, at the closing ceremony (Sept 9), there will also be a performance from the famed Sarawakian band Art Adau during the Bowling Prom Night at Megalanes Sarawak Batu Kawah.
