SIBU, Dec 30: A school holiday getaway for a mother and her two children turned tragic when the 10-year-old son was found drowned in the Bukit Lima Swimming Pool on Sunday (Dec 29) afternoon.

Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the victim, his mother and sister went to the pool at 5.30pm for a swim.

While the victim’s mother swam in the adult pool, her two children were in the children’s pool.

“Suddenly the 6-year-old sister informed her mother that her elder brother was unconscious in the pool.

“The victim’s mother immediately sought help from the public to send him to the hospital,” he said.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the victim was confirmed dead by a medical officer on duty, said Stanley.

According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that the pool had many visitors during the incident.

“The mother was then in a panic and could not ask the other children what had actually happened,” he said.

“The case is classified as sudden death,” he said, adding that the victim had heart disease and asthma.

In view of this tragedy, Stanley reminded the public to avoid leaving children alone in the pool without adult supervision.

“Take care of the children while taking them to public places this holiday season and make sure the children are supervised at all times,” he said. —DayakDaily
