KUCHING, Aug 13: The Sarawak International Open Tenpin Bowling Championship 2025 is set to make its return from Sept 8 to 13 at Megalanes Sarawak, attracting top bowlers from 10 countries and offering over RM160,000 in cash prizes.

In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the championship is expected to boost Sarawak’s economy by drawing participants and supporters who will stay, dine, shop, and travel throughout the state.

“From January to July, Sarawak’s tourism revenue has already surpassed RM1 billion,” he told a press conference at the Ministry’s Office in Baitulmakmur Building today.

Abdul Karim praised the Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association of Sarawak (ABAS) for introducing a lucrative prize structure to attract international talent, with RM20,000 each for the champions of the Open and Classified Divisions, and payouts extended to the top 40 positions.

He emphasised that the competition will serve as an important platform for Sarawak’s athletes to gain early exposure ahead of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 in Selangor.

Recognised by the International Bowling Federation (IBF), Asian Bowling Federation (ABF), and Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC), the tournament will mark its seventh edition this year.

ABAS president Sunny Si Poh Heng said confirmed entries include players from Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Bangladesh, Chinese Taipei, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, and the United States, alongside nine Malaysian states.

In conjunction with the championship, the annual Sabati Cup will take place on Sept 9, with entry fees channelled to charity. This year’s proceeds will be donated to the Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA). — DayakDaily
