KUCHING, Nov 25: Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) will conduct its 8th webinar, a series from Things That Bind Us (TTBU) tomorrow (Nov 26) at 9.45am, titled ‘Our Ancestors’ Lethal Invention: Sarawak Traditional Weapon’.
According to a media release, the webinar will be moderated by Sitty Nurhamiza Mohd Hamdan, a curator from the Sarawak Museum Department.
This webinar aims to introduce the different types of traditional weapons, understand the challenges faced in conserving them, and explore various strategies to enliven the timeless tradition of traditional weapons in Sarawak, especially among younger generations.
The speakers YPS invited for this webinar are Rebecca Richard, a researcher from the Sarawak Museum Department, and Atok Derop, a cultural officer from the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA).
YPS emphasised that traditional weapons of different ethnic groups can bring people together and strengthen unity within Sarawak’s community.
“Weapons, a lethal invention passed down from one generation to another. The weapons used by our ancestors to protect themselves against attackers.
“Now, these unique weapons are used to initiate traditional ceremonies and as gifts at traditional wedding ceremonies,” the statement shared.
The intricate design and motif used to create the weapon, YPS pointed out, hold a significant meaning for each ethnic group.
“Sarawak, with its diverse culture and heritage, promotes unity among the Sarawakians to learn about these unique weapons,” it added.
