MIRI, July 27: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan assures that the Sarawak Government through Yayasan Sarawak will continue to grant financial support to low-income students to overcome school dropout issue.
He said despite education is the purview of the federal government, Sarawak will ensure every child (in Sarawak) receives formal education.
Meanwhile, Tengah also gave assurance that numerous initiatives or programmes have been initiated to help students to pursue higher education.
“These (initiatives) include financial assistance via scholarships to help students achieve success in their studies,” said Awang Tengah at the Yayasan Sarawak Award Presentations to Excellence Students 2019 for Miri division held at Curtin Sarawak Campus here this morning.
Tengah said such initiatives were evidence of Sarawak government’s commitment to education and thus called on Yayasan Sarawak to continue with their proactive role in assuring that there will be no school dropout problem in Sarawak.
Tengah’s text-of-speech was read by Assistant Minister for Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus. Also present was Yayasan Sarawak director Azmi Bujang.
At the event, Yayasan Sarawak gave away grants totalling RM30,000 to four secondary schools in Miri – SMK Baru Miri (RM5,000), SMK Dato Permaisuri Miri (RM5,000), SMK Suai in Subis (RM10,000) and SMK Bakong also in Subis (RM10,000).
In Miri, a total of 113 SPM and STPM students received awards from Yayasan Sarawak for their excellent performance in studies while statewide, a total of 1,378 students were recognised by Yayasan Sarawak for outstanding academic performance in last year SPM and SPM examinations.
The awards presented were in the forms of Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) saving certificate or Sijil Simpanan Premium (BSN SSP) where the high achievers for SPM were awarded RM500 and STPM, RM700. — DayakDaily
