Yap: Eliminating hardcore poverty must be top priority of whoever wins in Kota Sentosa

KUCHING, Dec 8: Whoever wins the N12 Kota Sentosa seat should make eliminating hard core poverty in the constituency his top priority in the next five years, says Wilfred Yap Yau Sin.

The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for Kota Sentosa said other candidates must also pledge to help poverty stricken people in the area if they are elected as the people’s representative.

“The mission to elevate poverty stricken people is something that I feel should be an obligation and not just a campaign promise and that is why I ask that whoever wins the N12 seat should commit to do the same because it is just the right thing to do.

“So we (GPS) ask all the other candidates in this ‘contest’ to similarly make a pledge as we are doing today, to make elevation of the hardcore poor as the first priority come the next five years.

“The goal here is that no matter who gets in, this issue will be addressed and looked into immediately,” he said.

Yap, who is also Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kota Sentosa branch chairman, said it is evident that GPS has the capability to provide improvements and developments, citing Batu Kawah and resettlement villages adjacent to Desa Wira as examples.

Similarly the Stampin Resettlement Scheme area, he said, can be elevated to a much more beautiful, clean and hopeful housing area.

“In no way are we saying that we will provide them with ‘gold’ paved roads and ‘diamond’ street lightings but we do want to address the job issue there and find a way to connect the people there with available jobs so that they can come out of the poverty trap,” he said in a statement today.

The potential growth in terms of property value alone will help the people significantly and with a connectivity plan, he said the task of eliminating poverty in that area is more than achievable by a GPS representative. — DayakDaily
