KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7: The Works Ministry is seeking an allocation of between RM5 billion and RM6 billion under Budget 2027 to ensure federal roads nationwide can be maintained at an optimum level.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Maslan said the allocation was necessary to ensure road quality and safety were maintained, noting that the ministry received only RM3.18 billion this year for federal road maintenance.
Of the amount, RM2.08 billion was allocated for Peninsular Malaysia, RM640 million for Sabah and RM461 million for Sarawak.
“Therefore, we have requested the Ministry of Finance to provide a sufficient allocation in the upcoming budget,” he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Ahmad was responding to a supplementary question from Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara), who sought clarification on data from the ballot draw for road maintenance project procurements and whether the allocation received by the ministry was sufficient to meet maintenance requirements.
On the procurement of road maintenance projects, Ahmad said RM700 million had been specifically allocated for small contractors in the G1 to G4 categories through a ballot draw.
He said the ballot system was introduced to ensure greater transparency in the procurement process for maintenance works undertaken by the ministry.
“For the ballot draw, in 2026, the allocation for G1 to G4 contractors to benefit small contractors amounted to RM700 million, with RM300 million for Peninsular Malaysia, while Sarawak and Sabah received RM200 million each,” he said. — Bernama
