KUCHING, Aug 23: The MYJalan Campaign is being launched in August as the Ministry of Works (KKR) wishes to use the National Day celebration on Aug 31 to express gratitude to the Public Works personnel who were involved in the construction of the East-West Highway (JRTB) via the Setia Bakti Jalan Raya East-West (JRTB) FT04 programme.
The programme, according to Federal Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, aims to recognise the contributions and services of Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) workers who died as a result of a communist attack during construction (1974).
“One aspect that often receives less attention in discussions about roads is their significance in terms of national security and defence. The roads in Malaysia are silent witnesses to numerous incidents,” he said.
Nanta stated that the JRTB was constructed under the Security and Development (KESBAN) programme, a government initiative to develop rural areas in an effort to combat communist terrorist activities.
“This is a sincere expression of gratitude for those who have also contributed their ideas and energy towards the development of our country,” he added.
He also noted that JRTB has become an economic artery connecting three Malaysian states: Kedah, Perak, and Kelantan.
The Works Minister further stated that the programme can foster patriotism among the people and Public Works personnel by recognising the sacrifices and challenges faced by the unsung heroes in providing infrastructure to ease the people’s journey.
The MYJalan Campaign is a KKR initiative that engages all Malaysians in promoting awareness that roads are a shared responsibility among all road users.
