KUCHING, Feb 9: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk James Chan today appealed to Kuching residents to help keep the city beautiful, vibrant and clean.

He said this was not just for the sake of him, MBKS or VIPs but also for the people and visitors alike.

“We want to make sure that the people work with the council. We want a beautiful city for all the people, not just for the mayor but for all people, whether you are residents or visitors or delegates. We want to ensure that Kuching City’s image as a beautiful and clean city is always sustainable.

“It’s not only one day sustain but all the way towards the future. So, that is why we must have a good environment like parks for people to also enjoy and have a good living,” he told reporters covering MBKS’s Chinese New Year 2019 Celebration here today.

The guest-of-honour was the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and Toh Puan Ragad Kurdi Taib. Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian was also present.

Chan said about 10,000 people were expected to patronise MBKS’s Chinese New Year celebration.

“I know its a short one but whatever it is, this is a gathering to enjoy the Chinese New Year festival, the Chinese customs and the cultures so other races also would understand.

“Likewise, when it comes to Hari Raya, we invite our Chinese friends to visit our Muslim friends as well. Same goes for the Gawai Dayak festival.

“That’s why Sarawak has a very unique people’s character, very unique. I think you seldom find them in any other city in the world,” he said. — DayakDaily
