BEKENU, March 25: The much-anticipated road upgrading project connecting Kampung Rambai to Kampung Bulau in Bekenu has officially commenced with a groundbreaking ceremony officiated by Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak, Datuk Rosey Yunus, who is also the Bekenu assemblywoman.

Speaking at the ceremony today, Rosey described the project as a significant milestone for the local community, paving the way for better connectivity and accessibility in the Subis district.

“Today marks a crucial step towards improving infrastructure in this region. This initiative is not merely about constructing a new road; it lays the foundation for progress, development, and greater opportunities for all residents in the area,” she said.

For years, residents in these villages have faced numerous challenges due to inadequate road infrastructure. With this new project, the government aims to address a critical need—providing safer, smoother, and more efficient transportation for villagers, businesses, and visitors alike.

The upgraded road will link four villages—Kampung Rambai, Kampung Sinop, Kampung Mutap, and Kampung Bulau. It will commence at Kampung Rambai, pass through Kampung Sinop and Kampung Mutap, and conclude at Kampung Bulau.

The RM57 million project involves upgrading approximately 6.5km of existing gravel road to a fully paved road, as well as constructing an additional 3.5km of newly paved road from Kampung Rambai to Kampung Bulau.

Additionally, two concrete bridges will be built over Sungai Sibuti and Sungai Mutap Kechil, providing safer and more convenient crossings for residents.

Beyond enhancing connectivity, the project is expected to serve as a catalyst for economic growth.

Improved road access will attract more investments, create job opportunities, and stimulate local businesses. Farmers will have better routes to transport their produce, businesses will enjoy easier access to markets, and the younger generation will benefit from improved educational facilities.

The road upgrading initiative underscores the government’s commitment to uplifting rural communities by ensuring that essential infrastructure developments contribute to a better quality of life. — DayakDaily
