MIRI, June 15: Four Miri Civil Defence force (APM) on duty at the watch tower at Luak Esplanade here today, saved a woman in her 30s from attempting to end her life.

According to Capt (PA) Mohd Hazle Abd Hamid, beach goers told the APM personnel on-duty that a woman suddenly jumped into the sea, in an apparent attempt to commit suicide.

The incident occurred around 3.50pm.

“Upon being told of such an incident, four APM personnel immediately rushed to the location,” he said.

It took them nearly 30 minutes to persuade the woman, before she eventually gave up and surrendered.

Initial investigation revealed that the woman was intoxicated. She has been referred to Miri hospital for further action.

According to a witness, prior to the incident, she had spotted the woman sitting alone, drinking beer in a suspicious manner.

The woman’s bizarre behaviour as she sat alone drinking, prompted the witness to convey the information to the APM personnel at the watch tower.

“Less than 10 minutes after she (the witness) told about her encountered, beach goers came and told about a woman suddenly jumping into the sea,” said Mohd Hazle. — DayakDaily
