SIBU, Feb 14: A woman from Kuala Lumpur was today fined RM500 by the Magistrates Court here after she pleaded guilty to cheating a local in an iPhone scam.
The accused, Chik Umi Haxariah, 52, was charged under Section 37 (1) of the Sarawak Minor Offences Ordinance 1958. The offence carries an imprisonment term of three months and a fine of RM500.
According to the brief facts of the case, at about 10am on March 8, 2017, the 30-year-old complainant was at work when he saw an advertisement on social media that offered an iPhone 5s for sale.
The complainant from Song then contacted the accused through WhatsApp indicating his intention to buy the phone.
He was told by the accused that the price for the phone was RM900.
At about 6pm on the same day, the complainant transferred the said amount to the accused.
However he was told to make two more payments totalling RM1,650 the next day.
After making the extra payment, the accused again asked for more.
The complainant did not do so as he had run out of money.
He then told the accused he wanted to cancel the order and his money to be refunded to him.
However the accused blocked him from contacting her.
This prompted the complainant to lodge a police report. — DayakDaily
