KUCHING, Feb 28: The construction of Wisma Melayu Sarawak has reached 85 per cent completion, with hopes that it can be ready for use during the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan emphasized that several key aspects still need to be completed, including the power substation, water supply connectivity, final landscaping, interior finishing, and road leveling leading to the building.
“We hope the contractor can expedite the work, including finalising the surrounding landscaping and coordinating road leveling under the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak. Further discussions are needed to synchronise the roadworks,” he said in a prerecorded interview during a visit to the project site at Jalan Diplomatik today.

Awang Tengah stressed that proper coordination between the consultant, contractors, and project managers is crucial.
He noted that these outstanding issues should have been addressed and executed by October last year.
“However, due to the need to liaise with various departments, approvals take time. That’s why efficient coordination is essential. We want the work to be accelerated as much as possible,” he added.
Regarding the integration of the autonomous rapid transit (ART) network in the area, Awang Tengah confirmed that the main road in front of the site is part of the ART route.
“While I am not fully aware of the exact alignment, this building is strategically located near our sports facilities, including the stadium,” he said.
Meanwhile, the first phase of the project is scheduled for completion by May 2025, adding another iconic landmark to Kuching city.
The complex will feature a spacious hall accommodating up to 1,500 people, a museum, a gallery, office spaces, a café, and a surau.
The second phase will include a commercial building and a hotel. — DayakDaily
