KUCHING, May 26: An office unit in a government building at Petra Jaya was damaged by fire this evening.

Statement from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said a distress call was directly made by members of the public to Petra Jaya fire station at 7.13pm whereby smoke was seen coming out from Wisma Bapa Malaysia.

Two Fire Rescue Tender (FRT), an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS), and 16 firefighters from Petra Jaya and Padungan stations were dispatched to the scene.

Operation commander PKPgB Ranger Moss reported that the fire occurred in a server room on the third floor of the building.

Initially firefighters tried to enter the server room. However, they had to re-evaluate the situation due to thick smoke and sounds of small explosions which could be heard.

It was also reported that all the windows on the third floor were opened for ventilation purposes while all occupants in the building were safely evacuated.

Once electricity supply in the building was cut off at 8.28pm, firefighters immediately entered the server room where they located the fire at the switch box.

They successfully extinguished the fire within minutes using fire extinguishers. — DayakDaily
