“We welcome more international activities to come to Kuching,” said Wee during the Junior Chamber International (JCI) New Members Induction ceremony held at a local hotel, here yesterday (April 15).

Meanwhile, Wee said Kuching has won many awards over the last few years that touch on all aspects of community.

He said the awards are only part of the story because it is the work and the commitment behind it that matters.

“The awards reflect the our commitment to producing a sustainable community and to supporting all citizens, with equal opportunities and healthy environmental growth, to take part in society,” he added.

“This commitment includes our youth, the future of our society. They will be the ones to define this commitment going forward,” he added.

Having won the JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award, under the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, for its project IPeopleQmunity App in 2020, MBKS once again won the JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award, under the Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption & Production, for its project ‘Let’s Recycle Together’ in 2021.

At the end of 2021, Kuching was also recognised by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) as a Creative City of Gastronomy for its food heritage and diversity, with the city being the first in Malaysia to join some 49 cities around the world with the recognition.

Previously in 2015, Kuching was declared as a ‘City of Unity’ by the One Malaysia Foundation for the harmony that exists in the city. — DayakDaily
