KUCHING, Mar 20: Religious freedom should be preserved in Sarawak and people from various belief and religions can worship God using whatever word which deemed appropriate.
In response to the federal government’s appeal on the use of the “Allah” word, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng believed each religion are free to worship God using its own way.
Thus, he reminded the people and activists that religion should not be used as politicking nor being politicised.
“As a multicultural country, one must have mutual respect and religious tolerance for each other’s religion and belief.
“Each religion can have its own expression of God.
“Whether one is a Buddhist or a Christian, it teaches the person to be righteous and have mutual respect for one another,” he said during his live streaming on Facebook entitled “Shall Wee Talk” today.
At the same time, Wee concurred with the state government’s stand on religious freedom practised in Sarawak over the years since the administration of Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem and the current state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Wee noted that Christians in Sarawak using the word “Allah” is a non-issue.
He hoped that Sarawakians are different as compared to some people in Peninsular Malaysia whereby certain groups are using religion to gain self-interest and political mileage.
He also reminded the people not to raise any sensitive issues on religion that might harm racial harmony and religious tolerance in Sarawak adding that Sarawakian must be united and must not allow certain politicians to disrupt the racial harmony in Sarawak which was built over the years. —DayakDaily
